Clementine emerged around 2015 in Lisbon, when Shelley Barradas (a.k.a. Frankie Wolf) and Helena Fagundes (a.k.a. Lena Huracán), who had previously collaborated on other musical projects such as Vaiapraia and The Dirty Coal Train, decided to channel their shared passion for bands from the riot grrrl movement, like Bikini Kill and Sleater-Kinney, as well as classic and contemporary punk and post-punk influences.
The band went on hiatus between 2017 and 2018, during which both Shelley Barradas and Helena focused on other projects and work. Clementine returned in 2019 at IndieLisboa, participating in the film Ela É Uma Música by Francisca Marvão, and performing a concert as part of the festival. That same year, the band became active again and evolved from a duo into a power trio with the addition of bassist Chris Bernardes.
In 2020, they released the album Motorhome, featuring seven original tracks and a remix version of “Absolute Demolition,” recorded by Gonçalo Formiga of Cave Story and mixed by drummer Helena Fagundes. The short film Ruby, directed by Mariana Gaivão, premiered the same year and included two Clementine songs in its soundtrack: “Hell On Wheels” and “Absolute Demolition.”
In 2021, they were invited by renowned Brazilian director Raul Machado to take part in The Quarantine Experience, a series of remotely produced music videos during the pandemic. At that time, they released the music video for “Dry Martini,” inspired by Luis Buñuel’s perfect recipe for the cocktail.
In 2022, they participated in the 8th edition of SuperBock Super Nova, performing alongside Tó Trips and Unsafe Space Garden in some of the most important venues across Portuguese cities, including Maus Hábitos (Porto), Sociedade Harmonia Eborense (Évora), Sterogun (Leiria), Salão Brazil (Coimbra), Carmo 88 (Viseu), and Gretua (Aveiro).
